Great Wall of America (Explicit)
Born in China and immigrated to the US at 11, Bohan is an anomaly in both the American and Chinese music scenes. Challenging the norms of the mainstream music scene, Bohan includes both Mandarin and English lyrics in his songs as a reflection of his dual identity and aim to bridge the cultural gap between the two places he calls home. I’ve spent the last year and a half based in China, playing shows in mainland as well as Hong Kong, while making regular trips back to New York including a performance with Red Bull for their New York City Culture Clash in June 2024. Since 2024 I’ve been a global brand ambassador for Marshall Speakers, and now I’m back in New York with a stronger focus on the Western market. I grew up listening to some of the best storytellers, Tupac, Lauryn Hill, Eminem. Their music was a reflection of their own unique life experiences, but often also a commentary on the world around them. Naturally, I found myself becoming a storyteller as I started to mature as a writer. I realize that our stories are the most powerful tools we have to try to break down barriers and truly connect with each other. And if we don’t tell our stories, no one else will. As an Asian American, when I'm asked where I'm from, my reply of "New York" seems never to be satisfactory. "Where are you REALLY from?" they'll usually ask again. This perception that we don't belong because of the way we look, despite Asian Americans having literally built the railroads that became the backbone of this country, this concept of Asian people as perpetual foreigners, is what I'm challenging with this song. This is the lead single of a series of monthly singles leading up to a larger project to come in the summer.
