Orchestral Music (Finnish) [Society of Finnish Composers 50th Anniversary 1995, Vol. 3] [Finnish Radio Symphony, Saraste, Salonen, Segerstam]
The Society of Finnish Composers celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1995. As part of the festivities a series of recordings featuring active members of the society was launched. Volume 3 includes orchestral works by four different composers: Paavo Heininen (b. 1938), Erik Bergman (1911-2006), Harri Vuori (b. 1957) and Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016). Composer Paavo Heininen has been in the forefront of Finnish modernism since the 1950s. His orchestral Adagio from the 1960s is an example of his early dodecaphonic period and one of the finest Finnish orchestral works from the 1960s. Erik Bergman was another early pioneer of modernism, and his four orchestral nocturnes (Sub luna) offers a glimpse of his magic sound world that was to influence the generation of Finnish composers that emerged in the 1980s. Harri Vuori studied both with Paavo Heininen and Einojuhani Rautavaara. His orchestral work Kri is a student work which he wrote for his composition diploma, and first in a series of orchestral works of this future symphonist. For friends of Finnish contemporary music, Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016) requires no introduction. Included in this recording is an orchestral work from 1971, Regular Sets of Elements in a Semi-Regular Situation. In 2003, this Neo-Impressionistic work was revised into Garden of Spaces.
