Shadows

The announcer had a microphone in his hand, standing in a huge, covered, outside arena, talking to the camera. “That was Destiny with her hit single Calling to you and we just happen to have front-row seats, here, at the rehearsal for her summer tour." The song ended and he looked up to the stage, "Destiny, how are you?” Her smile shined from under her cowgirl hat. “Great! And the band is pumped, as you can see behind me.” As the interviewer jumped up on stage, I recognized Destiny's rowdy band in the background, laughing and carrying on without a care in the world about the cameras on Destiny; they seemed so used to it. “I’m hearing them. So, your tickets go on sale tomorrow?” The announcer asked. “Yes, but we have some to give to your listeners . . .” “I love her!” I proclaimed to Dereck. Shadows: We were holding each other. I knew our embrace was preparing me for something, so I held her tighter and said, “I’m scared.” When the darkness began to roll in, the sky changed, above us. “You won’t always be.” And then she begun to sing a haunting melody . . . “No one can see them but you. No one can tell you what to do. Alone, alone in a cold, dark night..." The wind tried to rip us apart. My legs wrapped around hers. “Don’t leave me.” We both began to spin like tumble weeds—soft, but spinning. She kept singing, “I’m here, baby, feel me. I’m with you, baby, you know me.” “I can’t do this any more.” Her melody continued as if trying to reach me, “Past the mist. confusion they show you-Hold on, he’s coming. They’re just shadows in the night. Get up, Sugarplum, get up and fight. Don’t let them make you hide, those damned shadows in the night . . .” My mother’s screams jolted me out of bed. Tin and His Skin: Reluctantly, he joined me. Our bodies swayed together and then it dawned on me, this was our first dance. And wouldn’t ya know it? Destiny was singing, “Tin and his skin”. When I look into his eyes . . . My skin was sizzling. “Dereck, kiss me.” He leaned down with an embarrassed smile, and pecked me. My eyes stayed shut, “No, baby. That. Just. Won’t. Do.” He chuckled, “We aren’t exactly alone here.” “Dereck. This is our first dance.” My eyes opened to see his recognition. He got caught in the moment, too, and gave me the kiss I wanted. It will go down as one of the most romantic kisses of my life. Destiny sung in the background . . . Gives my heart, courage to . . . fly . . . I was hoping for that rain and a tin roof, all of my own. “Get a room!” Colt heckled. Face to face, Dereck and I started smirking, “Busted.” My Pledge to You: Dereck was pulled up on stage, yelling back to me, “Serenity, what did you do?” A guitar was strapped to Dereck and he was in front of the mic, in front of thousands of people in just seconds. The crowd went quiet. Dereck took a deep breath and said to the audience, “Uh . . . Not quite sure how this happened, but—uh . . . here goes nothing, I guess." The words never sunk in, ’till now . . . Soldiers in the Rain: “So, we have been in the studio working on another album─” Destiny never got to finish her words as the crowd went crazy with approval. She grinned from the stage and said into the microphone, “Best fans in the world.” Yes, we got louder. Destiny started laughing, looking at her band, “Should we play a new song for these fine, fine folks that came to see us tonight?” The sea of people moved in waves with excitement. This was my first concert and I felt as though it would be the best I would ever attend. The lights went down to almost nothing but a blue glow. Then Austin started to play a haunting riff on his drums. It sounded like a drummer following soldiers to the battlefield in the civil war. The crowd went quiet, as if anticipating a special ride. When the drums ceased there was nothing but silence. I looked around in amazement. Dereck leaned and whispered in my ear, “This will be a military song. Our boys are still fighting overseas and this is Texas, baby.” I nodded and now understood the dark setting of lights and the mood shift in the crowd. In the silence, Blake began to play on his acoustic guitar. My heart started to pound, knowing she was coming next. Destiny stood at her microphone stand and began to slowly sing a song that would stay with us forever… Fear of unknown and what’s to come. . . Destiny’s metaphor for rain was eerie, and had captured the whole audience. We were in the palm of her hands and she knew it. Maybe that is why her emotions while she sang, were an open book for us all to see. . . . Letters and cards to carry them through . . . The music stopped. I believe we all stopped breathing. Every one of us, in this crowd of thousands, went silent with respect for soldiers all over the world. Just before I thought I would combust with such a performance, Destiny began to sing, with only Blake on guitar before the rest of the band followed. Laying down in his final resting place Voices singing Amazing Grace Mothers and lovers crying for him Tears are falling The Soldiers in the rain Tears were falling alright, from all eyes, man and woman. Austin’s soldier battle drums echoed into the night . . . Hold on Girl: One by one, splash by splash, they were in the water. I watched them heal even more. I knew she was here guiding our hearts. The melody that has owned me for over three years now, echoed through me . . . The End…Or is it? __The Forever Series__ Serenity Destiny Hope and Faith & Joy
