Growing up on the Mississippi river meant good blues music was never far. Working in the great state of MS gave me a chance to flex the blues muscles a bit and learn about the depth of blues on highway 61. Most of the tracks on this album are written by the great blues artists we all know and love, but track three is a nod to the great Eric Clapton and I attribute much of my sound to him. Track number five is a nod to Billy Gibbons who also helped carve my sound over the years and still remains one of my favorites. Some tunes will have a wailing blues sound that would double as fuel for a 59 Caddy. A few have country/blues roots filled with harps and dobros and a few others bring a bit of jazz flavor to the table. So, put on your dark shades, fix a whiskey neat and let this album wrap around you. The thrill for is that I refuse to play disco, rap or grunge music. This is what I refer to as B.S. music and the title track is "Play me some blues" for a reason. When you hear this music, you'll understand how I ended up firmly in the blues genre. I had started working on a blues CD ten years ago, but life got in the way. This last year I spotted an ad on Craig's list to pick up an old Hammond CV organ from a church for free. I was selected out of many folks and once I got this blues machine back home, I knew what came next. A new recording deck fell into my lap and then a killer deal on a tube guitar amp came next. It seemed like a message was playing in my head and I soon put a blues trio together. I downloaded as many great blues artists as I could find and threw myself deep into the blues greats. I was always a Savoy Brown, Johnny Winter fan and ZZ Top was my staple. Robin Trower and Pat Travers were more of my faves, but I bypassed all of them and went back to Muddy Water, Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson as well as Little Walter and Willie Dixon. I went to the local blues jams and hauled out a VK7 organ and leslie so I could practice up my chops and played for free for the first time in my life. My dream for ten years or more has been to record an all blues CD and I've spent so many cold nights in the studio till 2 and 3:am in the morning. The killer here is that I recorded and played on every single track as well as vocals. Everything you hear is not a band, but one person who is playing all of the instruments for real! Real harmonicas, real Hammond organ, real drumming, real bass and lead guitars played by hand. NO sequencing from a computer, just honest to goodness recording one instrument at a time. NO voice or pitch correction that all the young singers use in Nashville. NO tricks, just great blues music that is authentic and a great listen for any blues lover! This did not come from a high end studio, but right out of my garage. You be the judge and I dare you to find another recording as good as this done on a shoe string budget!
