This record has seemingly been released to mark the apparent departure of Jean-Michel Jarre from his long time label 'Disques Dreyfus' and it is a nice retrospective of his time there, something of a closing chapter in what has been an exciting and vibrant history. Although the running order could have done with a little more thought the record is a fine collection which will appeal to those who are unfamiliar with the majority of Jarre's output. Familiar classics are here such as Oxygene Part 4 and Rendezvous Part 4 but there are some surprising inclusions here that will challenge those more familiar with Jarre's repertoire, for instance, who can immediately recall exactly what 'Diva' sounds like? One must remember that Jarre has never been the most conventional of artists and that some of his best work is his lengthiest and that may account why some notable pieces such as Rendezvous Part 2 are missing from this collection. Dreyfus could have easily made this a two-disc volume that would not have sounded tired. It is surprising that 1981's 'Magnetic Fields' is not represented here, itself a landmark recording in the history of modern electronic music. It is also notable that 'Zoolook', in itself a great record, has no less then three of its tracks represented here whereas Jarre's most recent work on the Dreyfus label is rather underrepresented. Both Chronologie and Oxygene 7-13 were albums where Jarre was at his most accessible and the era produced some magnificent moment's yet only two tracks on this album capture this period of time. Metamorphoses and Sessions 2000 are albums which see Jarre moving into a new phase of his career yet only one track here, C'est la Vie, illustrates this new and vibrant time. All in all, this album is a fine retrospective look back at Jarre's career. It's better than Images and provides a nice stopgap until the mythological 'Aero' album sees the light of day.
