by Heather PharesThe Concretes' debut album Boy, You Better Run Now -- which collects their first two EPs -- showcases the Swedish collective's quirky pop hooks and arrangements. Reminiscent at times of a laid-back Stereo Total, the group is equally comfortable with straightforward, '60s-style pop like "Teen Love" and "Vacation" as well as darker, slinkier songs like "Other Ones" and "Sunsets." Cheap keyboards, organs, and brass decorate simple, lilting melodies like "Give a Little," "Cabaret," and "Contamination," and the unvarnished production and playing only adds to Boy, You Better Run Now's sweet, slightly off-kilter charm. A thoroughly enjoyable indie pop find.
