These events started in January 2012 and continue to happen from October to March each year in Canterbury, Kent, UK." "Meyer & Parker (FR73) The comedian Bill Hicks had a sketch called Goat Boy (on Revelations) in which he continued to do something obnoxious and alienating for so long that it becomes almost transcendent. In it’s own small way this improvisation does the same with a resonant amplified A that it stumbles across and then repeats obstinately for 3 minutes." "Spleen (FR67) This night was advertised as an opportunity for audience members to speak about subjects of local relevance that they felt passionately about. Despite (or perhaps because of) the polemical expectations of this event the opening improvisation was calm and focused. It started with a trill that highlighted the unusually resonant upper-middle register of the Free Range piano. These prominent overtones were picked out by repeated notes that were slightly out of tune with the natural harmonics. This improvisation was not edited." "Tricko (FR82) I hadn’t played like this all summer and I was glad to back in the company of this material. I had acquired some new extensions to my sound world (a hammered dulcimer, 2 harmoniums, a battery-powered amplifier) and this was the first time I had an opportunity to use them in a performance. The opening whistled melody comes from music I wrote to accompany a heritage tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella and garden leaves (eatingsound.com). The last section of this piece was inspired by a concert in which composers had rewritten the soundtracks to well known films. The end sequence of the Disney film The Black Hole had been rescored by the composer John de Simone as a tribute to John Barry." Thanks for listening, Sam Bailey
