by Steven McDonaldDrawn from the 1988-1992 collection of Bill Nelson recordings that resulted from one of the worst periods of his life, Electricity Made Us Angels proves, despite washes of electric guitar and layers of percussion, to be an album of contemplative moods in the form of songs. Nelson's vocals, somewhat thin to begin with, are pushed back in the mix, rendering both voice and lyrics often inconsequential, which is a pity -- his lyrics so often have a luminous quality to them. Contemplative aspects aside, some of the songs included here seem a bit weaker than average, failing to command attention for any length of time. Others are solid, some wonderful, but as a whole it's a bit mix and match, and works best taken in concert with Nelson's other releases of that type and period.
