by Stewart MasonAt 14 tracks in just under 27 minutes, the Bomboras' It Came from Pier 13! is the perfect length for an all-instrumental surf album, avoiding the often tiresome repetitive padding that plagues many similar records. The Bomboras understand that brevity is the soul of surf, and each of these songs is only long enough to introduce a cool, reverb-soaked riff or kitsch-exotica rhythm, let leader Jake Bombora's greasy Farfisa organ or Gregg Hunt's Dick Dale-style leads solo over it for a while (with occasional blasts of saxophone for good measure, as on the blowout "Kamikaze"), and then gracefully bow out. The results are impressively old-school enough that a pair of covers of obscure album tracks by genre godfathers the Ventures sound like Bomboras originals in context. This is as good as neo-surf instrumental albums get.
