New Day (新的一天)

New Day (新的一天)

I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia in the fifties. I was captivated by the guitar while watching Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. My father then bought me a guitar from the pawn shop and I was fortunate to find a guitar teacher, Wesley Jackson, in my community. I began taking lessons immediately. At the age of ten I was often recommended to local artist as a sideman in different bands. That led me to the opportunity to play at The Royal Peacock on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta backing many of the Big Stars in their prime such as, Solomon Burke. Eddie Floyd, Sam Cook, Johnny Taylor, Wilson Pickett and others. One summer when I was 13, I discovered jazz guitarist, Wes Montgomery, while visiting my aunt in Birmingham, Alabama. Then I began to listen to other guitarist and discovered Grant Green, Joe Pass, George Benson, Earl Klugh, , and Kenny Burrell, all of whom have influenced my sound in a very creative way. I have been fortunate to perform with the Four Tops, Bobby Womack, Eddie Kendricks, Bobby Blue Bland, Ali Woodson, Ben E. King, Solomon Burke, The Drifters, and The Tams. I have, also performed with jazz organist Jimmy Smith at The Blue Note Clubs in Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka while residing there. I first began my friendship with Japan in 1980 playing in the Osaka and Kansai areas. After returning to Atlanta in 2002 I enrolled in Georgia State University to finish my Music degree. I took four Years of Jazz Guitar and Improvisation classes, then transferred to Point University where I earned a B. A. degree in Music, in December 2012. Currently, I am performing and doing sessions in and around the southeastern U.S. Also, I am involved in the Music Ministry at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Lithonia, Georgia. Special thanks to Pastor Cheviene Jones, and all the musicians who contributed to this project : William Green Keys, Ted Stewart Bass, and Marc Mays, Damon Jefferson, and Adam Goodhue on Drums, Grady Pitts and Leroy Hadley from Night Shift Studio. Thank you Earl Klugh for your inspiration and encouragement, the numerous backstage passes, and also for attending my Senior recital at Georgia State University.
