Hilz
Hilary Mwelwa aka Hilz is no stranger to the game. Having started her career ten years ago as part of the duo, Hil St. Soul, Hilary has recorded 4 albums, garnered a massive international following and has collaborated and shared stages with some of music’s finest talent. Born in Lusaka, Zambia and raised in London, she latched on to her father’s love of music at an early age. Her family home came alive with the sounds of traditional Zambian music, as well as R&B, Gospel and classic voices of American soul, most notably Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Originally studying to go into the sciences, she earned a degree in Biology however after exploring her musical interests, her passion shifted, giving way to the realisation that she wanted to pursue music more seriously. Hilary took a year off from school to record and after teaming up with producer Victor Redwood-Sawyerr, Hil St. Soul was born. Their first album, Soul Organic was released in October 2000, becoming an instant underground hit and launching Hilary’s career. Hil St. Soul went on to release 4 albums in total, collaborating with artists like American soul singer Dwele, legendary rapper Pharoahe Monch and Roots Manuva Hilary’s universal charm has gathered her a large international following that has seen her perform all over the world at events like Glastonbury and the Capital Jazz Festival in Washington DC. Her career highlights include performing on The Jools Holland Show and singing for director Spike Lee at an event honouring his work. Famous venues such as the Jazz Café in London and SOB’s in New York have showcased her powerful vocals and her artistry has graced stages alongside musical legends such as James Brown, Raphael Saadiq, Macy Gray, D’Angelo, Angie Stone, Isaac Hayes, Donell Jones, Lalah Hathaway, Boys II Men and many more. Vibe Magazine labelled Hilary’s sound as a “rich, velvety voice that warms the inside like a spot of tea” and The Boston Globe heaped praise upon her voice, describing it as “a beguiling set of pipes with a whiff of Whitney here and a scoop of Chaka there”. Hilary’s music may feed the ears like a calorific meal but it’s organic substance is definitely good for you. Her content and melodies are hard hitting and never fail to leave an impression. Now recording under the name of ‘Hilz’, Hilary makes her highly anticipated return with a new project that she hopes will reach wider audiences and higher heights. The album, entitled “Bring Back the Love”, has been produced by The Rural, with the exception of “Bring back the love”, produced by Corin and “Loopy Loo”, and produced by Steve Anthony. This might be something different, but it’s still all Hilary and she is certain that old lovers of Hil St. Soul and new listeners alike will be able to connect with her music. If you’re a fan of authentic, wholesome sounds then you’ll most definitely want to stick with this talented lady as she continues on her soulful mission.
